Lyno Therapy
Lyno therapy deals with correcting bio-mechanical imbalances (effectively working on the cause of injuries). Any repetitive movement will cause certain muscles to work harder and these harder-working muscles will require more support. The body’s overlying fascia (the layer of tissue above the muscles) tends to contract towards those areas, leaving other areas with less support. Once an imbalance occurs in the distribution of fascia, symptoms will start appearing in the areas with less fascia support. This is evident in chronic hamstring or groin tears in rugby-players where the powerful quadriceps (thighs) and glutei (buttock muscles) demand excessive fascia support.
Lyno uses a series of strength and stretch assessment techniques to determine where the fascia is misaligned and therefore, which areas need treating. Specific release techniques are used to re-align the fascia. Once clients are familiar with this technique they are able to prevent future injuries themselves.
About Personal Best
Personal Best caters to sportsmen and women wishing to improve their performance. We employ international techniques learned from practitioners whose training techniques are at the cutting edge of modern sports conditioning. Not only is our focus on producing stronger and faster athletes – we also aim to produce long-lasting ones! A key aspect of our approach is to focus on posture. The better your posture, the more efficiently your body will be working and the faster/longer you can keep going.
Competitive athletes require clear performance goals and a training programme that supports the realisation of these goals. This brings us to the core of PB’s training philosophy – functional training.
Injury Rehabilitation
How you benefit:
- improve your recovery time
- reduce any potential for future injuries
- enjoy a wider support group of practitioners aiding your recovery
We look at your body as a whole entity, where every imbalance or restriction is most likely to affect not just the joint that the imbalance or restriction is situated around, but also the joint above or below.
For example, let’s say you are someone who over-pronates (when the arch of your foot drops inwards). You are most likely to drop your knee in towards your midline. This causes the outer aspect of the group of muscles on the front of your thigh (quadriceps) to work harder than the inner aspect of the same muscle group, leading to instability in your knee. This dropping inward can also lead to a weakening of your outward rotators of the hip and a tightening up of the muscles responsible for pulling your legs together. Most of the time, the area experiencing the pain is not the area that is causing the problem; the pain is the symptom, not the source.
When you injure yourself, there is a reason you were prone to that specific injury when it happened. Where some practitioners may look at rehabilitating you back to the point just before you became injured, we go one step further and look at why you were susceptible to the injury in the first place. Once we understand why it happened, we can build a truly effective rehabilitative programme, which will see you avoiding further injuries in the future.
Golf Biomechanics
How you benefit:
- improve your athletic ability
- experience greater mobility through your swing
- improve your physical fitness to achieve consistency throughout your round
- enjoy a body that can handle more physical stressors without injury
For anyone taking part in golf (whether professionally, semi-professionally or simply for leisure), we can help you develop the skills, strength and fitness necessary for your activity.
An example we like to use is the following: A golf swing is all about torso (trunk) rotation, but if you’re like most people, you may struggle to rotate your torso fully. Reduced rotation through the torso when swinging a club means less inertia (speed), resulting in a golfer who needs to generate club speed by swinging more with his/her arms. This often means dragging the face of the club across the ball, resulting in a slice.
Rather than trying to change your stance to improve the shot, we would concentrate on improving torso flexibility to increase your rotation, creating an easier, more fluid swing. This will result in more power with less effort.
Any skills-development/training programme we write is based on an initial physical assessment, during which we determine where your muscular strengths and weaknesses lie and assess the quality of your basic movement patterns. This way, the exercises recommended for you are very specific to both your sport and your own current physical condition, ensuring that ultimately, your movements are efficient and effective, making you a better golfer.
